Some line extensions are just a new size on an old idea. This one changes the whole complexion.

The Villiger 1888 San Andrés is a box-pressed extension of Villiger's 1888 line, pairing a dark Mexican San Andrés wrapper with an Ecuadorian Habano binder and Nicaraguan fillers, rolled at the company's own Villiger de Nicaragua factory in Estelí. It comes in three sizes, Robusto (5×50, $12.00), Toro (6×50, $12.50), and Churchill (7×47, $13.00), packed in boxes of 20, and it began shipping to U.S. retailers on June 15, 2026.

THE BLEND

The recipe reads clean. A Mexican San Andrés wrapper over an Ecuadorian Habano binder and all-Nicaraguan fillers, finished with a box press, the square-shouldered shape that sits comfortably in the hand and won't roll off your chair arm.

Villiger pegs the strength at medium-full and describes the flavor as espresso and black pepper finishing with an elegant nuttiness. That is a San Andrés cigar behaving the way San Andrés is supposed to behave, dark coffee up front, spice in the middle, something sweet-adjacent at the end.

SAN ANDRÉS COMES FULL CIRCLE

If the term is new to you, San Andrés is a thick, dark wrapper leaf grown in the volcanic soil of Mexico's San Andrés Valley. It's known for earth, dark chocolate, and coffee notes, and it has become one of the busiest wrappers in the premium market, for good reason.

Here's the detail most people will miss. When Villiger relaunched the 1888 line in December 2016, San Andrés was already in the cigar, sitting underneath as the binder of the Dominican-made original. Ten years on, the understudy takes the lead.

That's the thing about wrapper leaf, the same tobacco reads completely different when it moves from the inside of the cigar to the outside. The 1888 Nicaragua joined the family in 2023, and the San Andrés now makes it three blends wearing the founding year on the band.

A SWISS HOUSE WITH NICARAGUAN HANDS

Jean Villiger founded the company in 1888 in Pfeffikon, Switzerland, at 28 years old. When he died in 1902, his wife Louise stepped in and ran it, a woman heading a European tobacco house at the turn of the century. The family owns it still, five generations on.

The 1888 series is the company's tribute to that founding year, and the new blend keeps production in-house for the modern era at Villiger de Nicaragua in Estelí, the company's factory in the heart of Nicaraguan tobacco country.

The release also lands in a reflective season for the house. Longtime patriarch Heinrich Villiger passed in July 2025 at 95, after decades at the wheel, the kind of figure whose standards still hang over every band the company prints.

THE BLIND LABEL TAKE

At $12.00 to $13.00, this sits right in the sweet spot of what a working smoker will actually pay for an everyday box-press. A San Andrés blend from a house that has been rolling tobacco since Grover Cleveland was president, priced under most of the flash-heavy releases it will share a shelf with, that's a serious pitch.

The caveat: we haven't burned through a box yet. Villiger's blend notes are a promise, not a verdict, and you should treat ours the same way. No score from us until we've smoked more than one.
