J.C. Newman made 50 humidors to honor America's 250th birthday. Each one arrives with 50 cigars already inside.

The cigars are a new size in a line called The American. It is a 6 1/4 x 50 perfecto, tapered at the head and the foot.

The blend is all homegrown. A Florida Sun Grown wrapper sits over a Connecticut broadleaf binder, with filler from Connecticut and Pennsylvania.

The humidor itself is the showpiece. Empty of its starter fifty, it holds 100 to 125 cigars, so it keeps working long after the first box is gone.

You get the smokes to enjoy now. You get the box to fill for years.

THE CRAFTSMANSHIP

The lid is the part people will stare at. It is a marquetry map of the United States, pieced together from 50 different woods.

Here is the detail that lands. Each state is cut from a wood native to that state, so the map is literally built from the country it shows.

Colorado brings blue spruce. California brings coast redwood. Hawaii brings koa. Texas brings pecan. Fifty states, fifty woods, one lid.

A red, white, and blue border frames the map. The official America250 logo sits on the front, and the hinges and hardware are made in the United States too.

Every humidor is built by hand by Jason LeGear. Because the grain of each wood runs its own way, no two of the 50 look exactly alike.

THE MAKER

To understand why this release fits, you have to know who made it. J.C. Newman is the oldest family-owned cigar company in America, founded in 1895.

The cigars are rolled in Tampa at a factory called El Reloj. It is the last large cigar factory still making cigars in the United States.

Drew Newman, the fourth generation of the family, runs it today. The place is a working factory and a museum at the same time, open to anyone who wants to see cigars made the old way.

That history is the reason the company was picked as the official cigar maker of the U.S. Semiquincentennial. A 250-year birthday asked for a maker with real American roots.
