My Father The Judge Grand Robusto is a full Nicaraguan puro wrapped in an Ecuadorian Sumatra Oscuro, built at the Garcia family’s My Father Cigars S.A. factory in Estelí, Nicaragua. In 2024 it was named the industry’s number one cigar of the year. I smoked the Grand Robusto, the 5×60 box-pressed format that launched with the line in 2016. The verdict isn’t complicated.

FROM THE PORCH
The first time I heard about The Judge was in one of the big cigar magazines. I went out and bought a bunch, some for me and some for a buddy of mine, and it turned into one of those cigars I can truly call a go-to.
The photo below is from the Montecristo Cigar Lounge at the Paris Hotel in Las Vegas, and it’s a poor photo, I know. Most of these get smoked out on the porch with Dallas beside me, I just couldn’t find a porch shot when I went looking. Definitely Dallas-approved. My notes are below.
BEHIND THE BLEND
José “Pepin” Garcia left Cuba in 2002 and opened a small factory on Calle Ocho in Miami’s Little Havana, where his son Jaime started building a blend in secret, meant as a gift to honor his father. Pepin found out, demanded samples, and liked what he smoked, and that tribute blend became the foundation of My Father Cigars. The family opened their Estelí, Nicaragua factory in 2009, and The Judge arrived in late 2016, named for a close friend of the family who happened to be a judge. It cracked the industry’s year-end top ten within a year, and in 2024 it went all the way to number one, the third Garcia blend to take that honor after wins in 2012 and 2015.

BLEND SPECS
The Ecuadorian Sumatra Oscuro wrapper is dark enough to look almost black in certain lighting, with a visible tooth you can feel when you roll it between your fingers. The dual binder of Corojo and Criollo brings combustion reliability and flavor complexity, and the filler draws from three Garcia family-owned farms in Jalapa, Estelí, and Condega, meaning the tobacco quality is controlled from seed to smoke.

The line launched with the Toro and Grand Robusto in 2016, the Toro Fino followed in 2017 and the Corona Gorda in 2020. All four come box-pressed in 23-count boxes. The Corona Gorda is the sleeper of the lineup, the smaller ring gauge brings the wrapper character forward and at around $11.60 it’s a smart entry into the blend.
THE COLD DRAW
The Grand Robusto is a dense, toothy handful for a five-inch cigar. The foot aroma is rich dark cocoa, espresso, cedar, and an earthy sweetness. The cold draw is effortless, dark chocolate, cedar, and a little leather with natural sweetness underneath.

The Judge carries full body without delivering full strength in an overwhelming way. It has genuine backbone and presence, but it does not steamroll you. That balance between power and flavor is what separates a great cigar from a merely powerful one.
THE FIRST THIRD
Cedar and black pepper lead, carried on thick, creamy smoke from the first draw. A slight saltiness sets this apart from predictable Nicaraguan profiles. Almond and toasted nuts begin to emerge, adding complexity. Construction is exceptional, ash holds firm, burn stays even, draw remains perfectly open.
THE SECOND THIRD
Dark chocolate and cocoa move to center, supported by leather and a woodsy earthiness. The creaminess in the smoke becomes even more pronounced, with a subtle anise note adding dry, herbal complexity. For me, this is the best stretch of the cigar.
THE FINAL THIRD
Cedar returns with more presence, coffee and espresso notes deepen, and the pepper makes one final appearance, adding energy to the finish without aggression. The finish is long and warm. Slow down over the final inch, it stays cool and flavorful right to the nub.
